Parental and Childcare Leave

Scheme and Eligibility Criteria Amount Eligibility
Government-Paid Maternity Leave (GPML)

  • Child born on or after 1 January 2017
  • Worked at least 3 continuous months with the same employer before birth
Singapore citizen child

  • 16 weeks

Non-Singapore citizen child

  • 12 weeks under the Employment Act
Government Paid Maternity Benefit (GPMB)

  • Those who are not eligible for GPML may apply
  • Child born on or after 1 January 2017
  • 1st – 2nd child: 8 weeks
  • 3rd and subsequent child: 16 weeks
Government-Paid Childcare Leave (GPCL)

  • Singapore citizen child
  • Below 7 years old
Worked 3 continuous months

  • 6 days per year until child turns 7
  • Max 42 days for each parent
  • Max $500 per day including CPF

Worked less than 3 continuous months

  • 2 days per year until child turns 7 under the Employment Act
Extended Childcare Leave (ECL)

  • Singapore citizen child
  • Youngest child between 7 and 12 years
  • Worked 3 continuous months
  • 2 days per year until child turns 12
  • Max $500 per day including CPF
Adoption Leave for Mothers (AL)

  • Either parent or child is a Singapore citizen
  • Foreign child becomes Singapore citizen within 6 months of adoption
  • Formal intent to adopt on or after 1 July 2017
  • Child below 1 year old
  • Worked 3 continuous months at point of formal intent to adopt
12 weeks
Unpaid Infant Care Leave (ICL)

  • Singapore citizen child
  • Worked 3 continuous months
  • 6 days unpaid a year regardless of number of children
  • 6 days paid leave on top of 6 days unpaid if child is below 2 years old
Government-Paid Paternity Leave (GPPL)

  • Singapore citizen child
  • Currently or formerly married to child’s mother
  • Child born on or after 1 January 2017
  • Worked 3 months before birth
2 weeks
Government-Paid Shared Parental Leave (SPL)

  • Singapore citizen child
  • Formal intent to adopt/child born on or after 1 July 2017
  • Married to child’s mother (You are/were lawfully married to the child’s mother at some point between conception and birth)
  • In addition to GPPL
  • Up to 4 weeks of wife’s adoption leave / maternity leave
